It is known to those who have devoted attention to thejiip of the magnetic needle, in surveying or otherwise, that there is a diurnal variation or disturbance of its action, as was clearly set.

BECAUSE of its simplicity, the dip needle is widely used for locating magnetic rock formations in drift-covered areas. Although it responds only to strong magnetic disturbances, it has the advantage that surveys with it can be carried out rapidly, at relatively low cost, by untrained operators. More accurate surveys can be made with a much more sensitive instrument known as the magnetometer.

The dip-needle used was a Hughes-Owens instrument, made in England, sealed to prevent access of dirt and plumbed by suspending from a ring. The needle was not balanced for this area, therefore, the changes in reading are small, but I did not care to tinker with a sealed instrument.

A dip-needle survey of a heavily drift-covered part of the Keweenawan copper district of northern Michigan, in which there are few outcrops, was undertaken in an effort to trace the major Keweenawan units beneath the drift. Small but persistent variations in dip-needle readings made it possible to locate several belts of basic flows, and to trace a number of faults and shattered zones.
